What is a “new” Academy?
Academy schools (Academies) were first established under the Academies Act 2010. They are publicly funded, state schools. They operate outside Local Authority control, being directly funded by central Government. Academies enjoy a significant increase in operational autonomy which they must use to help innovate and raise standards and enhance the opportunities available to all students. In November 2010 the Government invited all schools rated by Ofsted as “Outstanding” or “Good with outstanding features”, to consider conversion to Academy Status.
At the full Governors meeting on Tuesday 14 June 2011, Governors unanimously supported Heath Park’s application to the Secretary of State for Academy status. The school officially became an academy in December 2011.
