Key Stage 3

Students study a variety of topic areas, which incorporate those that are studied at GCSE level. Lessons include all 4 linguistic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Students are encouraged to take an active role in lessons, whether it’s conducting surveys, creating conversations or playing language games.

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4

There are 4 main topic areas for the course; Personal Information, Out & About, Customer Services and Transactions, Future Plans, Education and Employment. Each topic consists of a number of sub-topics. All topic areas can feature in the end of course examinations, however it is the teacher’s choice as to what areas are used for controlled assessments.

  • Exam Board: Edexcel
  • Lessons per week: 2 sessions

Examination Details

The GCSE is made up of 60% controlled assessment and 40% examination. Students can be entered at either Foundation or Higher tier for the terminal examinations.

Listening – exam at the end of the course (20%)

Speaking – consists of 2 controlled assessments (15% each) and can be undertaken at any time during the course – these are marked by the teacher and moderated by the exam board.

Reading – exam at the end of the course (20%)

Writing – consists of 2 controlled assessments (15% each) and can be undertaken at any time during the course – these are marked by the exam board.
