The Leisure and Tourism GCSE actively engages in the study of leisure and tourism to develop as effective and independent learners. During the course the students will learn about the nature of leisure and tourism industry and how it contributes to the economy and society.

Examination Details

There is a 60/40 weighting for the final mark

  • Unit 1- Leisure and Tourism Industry (Worth 40% of the overall mark) 1 hour exam
  • Unit 4- Customers and Employment in Travel and Tourism- Controlled Assessment (Worth 60% of the overall mark)

The travel and tourism sector continues to grow at a rapid pace, with the amount of travel undertaken by individuals for both leisure and business purposes continuing to increase. An expansion in the short-break market has led to growth of regional airports in the UK and across Europe and a rise in the number of new hospitality enterprises including health spas and boutique hotels.

This rapid expansion has led to a huge demand for a more flexibly skilled workforce. The course is foundation which will prepare students who want to access higher education to be able to study Marketing, Tourism or Tour Operations Management, Events Management or Aviation Management.

The course is split into three qualifications which are:

  • BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (Equivalent to 1 A-Level)- students study 6 units of coursework
  • BTEC Level 3  Diploma (Equivalent to 2 A-Levels)- students study 12 units of coursework
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (Equivalent to 3 A-Levels)- students 18 units of coursework
